Biomedizinische Forschung

The Biomedical Research (BMF) was established to provide researchers at the Medical University of Graz with a high-quality biomedical infrastructure. The BMF is responsible for the housing and breeding of laboratory animals under various hygiene levels and provides researchers with the necessary infrastructure for in vivo studies.

The BMF is located in the campus’s own Hahnhof, which was renovated and rebuilt in 2025 to enable animal housing according to the latest state-of-the-art standards. At the Hahnhof, small and large animals are kept at different hygiene levels and according to the most modern standards. Additionally, the BMF includes fully equipped surgical and (specialized) laboratories as well as offices and meeting rooms. Additional animal housing managed by the BMF is located at the Center for Medical Research (ZMF), the Interdisciplinary Surgical Research (ICF), Radiology, and MED Campus Modules 1 and 2.

The Department of Biomedical Research consists of the Core Facilities Experimental Biomodels and Preclinical Imaging. Furthermore, services are offered through the Animal Facility, including Embryo Transfer, Diagnostic Laboratory, the Project Review team, and Events.

Moreover, the BMF at the Medical University of Graz is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Austrian Animal Experimentation Act. A special focus is placed on promoting the 3R principle – Replace, Reduce, Refine – to improve and reduce animal testing. This is achieved through targeted training, consulting, and events.
