Biomedizinische Forschung

Biomedical Research, as an ISO-certified service unit, supports the core research areas of the Medical University of Graz in the housing and breeding of laboratory animals as well as in the planning, execution, and evaluation of in vivo studies. In parallel, Biomedical Research is responsible for ensuring compliance with the 3R principles in preclinical research and promotes the use and development of alternative methods.

The Biomedical Research consists of the two core facilities Experimental Biomodels and Preclinical Imaging as well as the service units Animal FacilityDiagnostic Laboratory, and Project Review. Additionally, Biomedical Research offers training opportunities for researchers at the Medical University of Graz, external researchers, and school classes.

Experimental Biomodels

The Core Facility Experimental Biomodels supports researchers in planning and conducting their preclinical in vivo research. This includes, among other things, support for research projects in developing innovative surgical techniques and expertise in laboratory animal anesthesia and pain management. In addition to supporting research projects, the Core Facility Experimental Biomodels offers veterinarians in training to become ECVAA Diplomates an internship in laboratory animal anesthesia through the ECVAA Satellite Training Center.

Preclinical Imaging

The Core Facility Preclinical Imaging supports researchers in planning, conducting, and evaluating preclinical in vivo imaging procedures. The following methods are available micro-CT, micro-ultrasound including photoacoustics, optical imaging via fluorescence/bioluminescence. The Core Facility also manages a biological irradiator.

Animal Facility

The Animal Facility department enables researchers to house and breed various laboratory animal species at the on-campus Hahnhof location. Furthermore, the Animal Facility provides researchers with rooms for treatments, surgeries, and behavioral experiments and supports researchers in all tasks related to the breeding and housing of their animals.

Diagnostic Laboratory

The Diagnostic Laboratory team offers researchers at the Medical University of Graz and external researchers the analysis of their blood samples through comprehensive blood counts and clinical-chemical parameters

Events

Biomedical Research offers continuing education events in laboratory animal science for researchers, students, and veterinarians.
Additionally, school classes can visit Biomedical Research to gain insight into the work of the organizational unit and critically discuss the relevance of animal experiments and New Approach Methodologies (NAMs).
